UPDATE at 7:58 pm: Seattle police say the woman was 21 years old. They say she was crossing the railroad tracks in an area that isn’t open to the public and is not a legal railroad crossing.

A woman in her early 20s was struck and killed by a Sounder Train Monday evening in the 5500 block of Airport Way South, the Seattle Fire Department said.

The train was traveling between 40 and 50 mph when the accident was reported about 6:20 pm, said Kyle Moore, a Fire Department spokesman.

Medics performed CPR on the woman, but could not revive her, Moore said. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office was on the scene to make an official pronouncement, he said.

Seattle police were on the scene and BNSF Railway has been asked to stop trains temporarily, Moore added.

In Burlington, a man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train at 9:40 a.m. Monday, according to the Associated Press.

BNSF Spokesman Gus Melonas said the man walked away from a business and residential area to the tracks in an area about 50 yards away from a crossing.

The fatality delayed Amtrak and two freight trains.
